As per the design & construction of gear pair, transference of motion among the driving shaft & driven shaft, the rotating direction or movement can be changed also just like in case of Sprocket Gears. Also, in case the gears are not of equal sizes then system may experience mechanical benefits which will allow a change in the output torque or speed.
